According to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the mean GMAT total score is about 552, and two-thirds of all test-takers score between 400 and 600. The total score is calculated from the verbal and quantitative section scores, each of which are reported from 0 to 60. GMAC data shows that the average verbal and quantitative scores are about 27 and 39 respectively. Students accepted to selective business schools nearly always perform well above these averages. The doctoral program at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, for example, claims some of the world's highest average GMAT scores at 750 total and 50 quantitative. For the PhD program at UCLA's Anderson School of Management, the average GMAT is 735. GMAT performance at elite MBA programs is generally not quite this high, but expectations are nonetheless stringent. Stanford, Harvard, and Wharton all report averages for successful MBA applicants at 720 or above.
There are many good schools that will strongly consider applicants with lower scores, but elite GMAT performance gives students the largest range of choice for their graduate business education. High GMAT scores can be attained with the assistance of competent teachers. Manhattan Review's GMAT students have been accepted to many of the world's top business schools, including Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Stanford, NYU, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Columbia, Oxford, and the London School of Economics. An MBA or PhD from a prestigious institution is eminently marketable. Manhattan Review's former GMAT clients have been hired by Fortune 500 companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, Enterprise Products Partners, Amazon.com, and Dow Chemical. Our alumni also currently work for Mexico City firms such as Interjet, Grupo Carso, Telmex, and Siemens Mexico. I took the GMAT this past weekend in Manhattan and got a 680. I'm quite happy with the score - a bit frustrated as I wanted a 700, but still pleased. The course was helpful. The best part I feel was the time spent drilling - and answering our questions on specific problems.

Meet a Mexico City GMAT Tutor: Judy K.
Judy K., a native of Miami, Florida, completed her undergraduate studies in economics at Duke University. She then served in the U.S. Army for six years, and was stationed at bases around the world. After leaving the service, she entered business school at Emory University and finished her MBA in the top 10% of her class. She prepared for the GMAT with Manhattan Review's private tutoring, and received a total score of 720.
Judy is currently developing a business plan for a retail clothing outlet. She has been teaching GMAT prep since 2010, and understands the importance of the exam to success in business courses. "There are so many things I learned while studying for the GMAT that were invaluable to business school coursework," she says. "I could point to specific verbal and quantitative skills, but most importantly, the GMAT builds reasoning abilities." Judy's GMAT students have been accepted to business schools such as UCLA, Yale, Wharton, and the University of Virginia.
