TOEFL requirements can be affected by factors such as academic discipline, degree level, institutional ranking, and whether or not an applicant is interested in pursuing a teaching assistantship. At Boston University, for example, the general undergraduate standard is a composite score of 84, but undergraduate applicants to the School of Management must produce a total score of 91, with subscores of at least 21 listening, 25 reading, 23 speaking, and 22 writing. At Cornell University, undergraduate students are required to score a 100, but graduate students need only score a 70 (as long as this total score is built from at least 15 listening, 20 reading, 22 speaking, and 20 writing). The highest TOEFL minimums are at Princeton and Oxford, which expect composite scores of 108 and 110 respectively. The Graduate School at Northwestern University mandates a total score of 100, but applicants for teaching assistantships must receive at least 26 on the speaking section of the test.
